Borderline Disorder helped in Cambridge and London with Applied Psychological Techniques
Borderline personality disorder is a personality disorder involving emotional instability and very black and white thinking or 'splitting'. If you have borderline personality disorder you tend to have a very unstable self-image and chaotic interpersonal relationships. You tend to switch between viewing people or experiences as either 'all good' (idealisation) or 'all bad' (devaluation). This can cause many relationship difficulties, as one moment you may view your partner/friend/whoever as completely perfect and the next as the worst person ever. You may also regularly feel very empty, alone or abandoned.
Borderline personality disorder sufferers tend to display reckless compulsive/impulsive behaviours, such as drinking, binge eating, drug abuse amongst others. Self-harm is very common, and people with the disorder may also make suicide attempts.
If you have borderline personality disorder you tend to view the world as dangerous and threatening and are hypervigilant towards rejection. You may see yourself as being unacceptable and powerless.
This personality disorder is called 'borderline', because, 20 years ago, the person was thought to be on the border between a neurosis and a psychosis - that belief isn't held anymore, but the term has stuck.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, D.S.M.4, defines borderline personality disorder in the following way;
"A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self image, and emotions, and marked impulsivity beginning in early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five or more of the following;"
1. frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment
2. a pattern of intense and unstable relationships
3. persistently unstable self image (and attempts to control it)
4. impulsivity in at least two areas that are self damaging e.g. spending, substance abuse, sex, reckless driving, binge eating
5. recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats or self mutilating behavior
6. affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood.
7. chronic feelings of emptiness
8. inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger
9. transient stress related paranoid ideation or severe dissociation.
