Compulsions and Compulsive behaviour helped in Cambridge and London with Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and Applied Psychological Techniques

A compulsive behaviour is one that is undertaken on impulse or with a sense of having been ‘driven’ to it. You may feel that they have little control over your bahaviour or that you 'just have to' carry out the behaviour. The drive behind a compulsive behaviour is a desire to feel good/ happy/ relaxed/ alive right now. Instant relief or a sense of escaping from your problems is felt by undertaking the compulsive behaviour. There may be feelings of guilt or shame felt afterwards, but immediate gratification is felt at the time.

You may have heard of compusions or compulsive behaviours in relation to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). I find it more helpful to call the behaviours associated with OCD, obsessive behaviours, separating them from the compulsions discussed here. This is because the processes underlying these two types of behaviours are different.

Compulsive behaviours are often performed with little thought, and the person feels an immediate sense of relief from undertaking the behaviour. Obsessive behaviours occur as a result of obsessional thoughts, rather than the person suddenly just feeling compelled to do something to provide relief in the moment. Obsessive behaviours tend to be linked to the obsessional thoughts, or occur because the sufferer believes that performing the obsessive behaviour will prevent the 'bad thing' they have thought about from happening. A sense of relief is often never achieved.

Compulsions or compulsive behaviours include any behaviours that are undertaken on impulse to provide relief in the moment. The following behaviours and symptoms tend to be compulsive:

  • Compulsive eating - overeating, binge eating and comfort eating
  • Bulimia
  • Smoking
  • Compulsive drinking, binge drinking and alcoholism
  • Self-harming
  • Excessive shopping and spending
  • Gambling
  • Drug taking and addictions
  • Lying
  • Cheating
  • Having regular unprotected sex or numerous sexual partners
  • Trichotillomania - compulsive hair pulling
  • Nail biting
  • Impulse control problems

If your particular problem isn't mentioned above then please don't be put off - there are so many problems that can come under the category of compulsive behaviours that it would be difficult to list them all! I can help with a huge range of compulsions, as the underlying driving forces are the same for all compulsive behaviours.

People who undertake compulsive behaviours often have some self-esteem and anxiety issues. Their compulsive behaviour is a way of providing them with a bit of a boost or relief in the moment, when stressed, anxious, unhappy, bored, etc. Once the compulsive behaviour has been undertaken and the satisfaction from undertaking the behaviour died down, people tend to feel guilty, ashamed or disgusted with themselves. This can lead to further reductions in self-esteem.

I offer a number of highly successful treatments in both Cambridge and London for compulsions.

Helping Compulsions through Suggestion Therapy

Suggestion Therapy (sometimes called Clinical Hypnosis) is used to treat less complex compulsive behaviours and problems. If you don't have any strong emotional issues, with which you would also like some help, then suggestion therapy is a powerful tool for helping to eliminate compulsive behaviours such as nail biting, overeating and smoking.

With suggestion therapy, you are relaxed into a very nice, calm, hypnotic state, and then given suggestions entirely for your benefit, which will help you to feel in control and enable you to change your behaviour for the better. You will find that the suggestions given to you will really boost your confidence and willpower.

Resolving Compulsions with Pure Hypnoanalysis

Compulsive behaviours are often caused by low self-esteem due to bottled up and unresolved emotional conflicts. Due to unresolved anxieties, you don't feel good about yourself, so you impulsively undertake behaviours that make you feel good in the moment.

Pure Hypnoanalysis is a very special type of hypnotherapy, that is highly successful at treating compulsions. It is a uniquely successful therapy, which allows you to completely resolve the root emotional cause of your compulsive behaviour, in a very safe and non-judgmental atmosphere. It is one of the best methods in the world for treating emotional, psychological or anxiety-related problems. This therapy only takes around 6 - 12 sessions, allowing you to make huge changes to your life in a very short space of time.

Banishing Compulsions through Changing Limiting Beliefs

The Rob Kelly Changing Limiting Beliefs training programme is an alternative way of putting an end to your compulsive behaviour. It combines a huge number of unique insights and psychological processes. This programme teaches you how to take control of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, doubts and worries and really build your self-esteem. With this training you will be able to completely change the way you think and feel about yourself and challenging situations, enabling you to live a happier, more successful and positive life. Through changing your limiting beliefs you will find that you will gain amazing personal insight and will be able to stop your compulsive behaviour.

This Changing Limiting Beliefs training programme is particularly suitable for anyone who may, for whatever reason, find going through a course of Pure Hypnoanalysis particularly difficult or impossible.
