Obsessions, Obsessive Behaviour and OCD helped in Cambridge and London with Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and applied psychological techniques

Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, images and worries, which can be very annoying, upsetting or even debilitating for the sufferer. We all have intrusive and disturbing thoughts from time to time but some people find it harder to 'let go' of these. If you are obsessional you have many repetitive and distressing thoughts, which can really limit your life. You spend so much time brooding and worrying that you do not get out and live the life you really want to.

The kind of worries that can affect someone who is obsessional include:

  • Fears of dirt, germs and contamination
  • Health anxiety worries, e.g. fears that you have cancer or another serious illness
  • Jealously or possessiveness over a partner, e.g. regular worries that your partner is cheating on you
  • Paranoia - fears that people are out to get you or wish to cause you harm
  • Fears that you are going to do something to harm another person, particularly loved ones
  • Intrusive and upsetting sexual thoughts, which you may perceive as dirty or abnormal
  • Fears of disaster, e.g. fire, burglarly, accidents
  • Superstitious thoughts
  • Any other intrusive, repetive or negative thoughts or worries

These intrusive thoughts can lead to obsessive behaviours. Obsessional people tend to feel very out of control in respect to their obsessions. If you are obsessional you probably feel powerless and overwhelmed in the face of your obsessive thoughts and images. You feel as though you cannot do anything to stop them. As a result of these feelings of helplessness, you perform certain behaviours, in an attempt to gain some control. These behaviours are often known as 'compulsions' within the mental health profession and obsessional people may be diagnosed with 'OCD' or 'obsessive compulsive disorder'. I find it more helpful to call these behaviours 'obsessive behaviours' as this describes them more effectively. Compulsive behaviours describe an entirely different process. Indeed obsessive-compulsive disorder would be better named something like 'obsessional disorder'!

A compulsive behaviour is one that is undertaken, often with little thought, on impulse or with a sense of having been ‘driven’ to it, and instant relief is felt. There may be feelings of guilt or shame felt afterwards, but immediate gratification is felt at the time. For obsessive behaviours, this sense of relief is often never achieved. The person is likely to focus excessively on the issue at hand, for example becoming clean, often becoming totally preoccupied by it. He/she can become involved in repetitive cycles of behaviour which provide little or no relief, for example repetitive handwashing. Obsessive behaviours occur as a result of obsessional thoughts, rather than the person suddenly just feeling compelled to do something to provide relief in the moment. Obsessive behaviours tend to be linked to the obsessional thoughts or occur because the sufferer believes that performing the ritual will prevent the 'bad thing' they have thought about from happening.

Obsessive behaviours can include:

  • Cleaning behaviours - e.g. handwashing, cleaning the house
  • Checking behaviours - e.g. repeatedly checking that the door is locked, repeatedly checking the oven is turned off, repeatedly checking that you have got the time you are meeting someone correct
  • Ordering and arranging - e.g. lining everthing up in your cupboard in a certain way
  • Ritualistic tasks - having to perform a task in a particular order and way so that it is done perfectly
  • Counting behaviours - e.g. counting strings of numbers to 'prevent something bad from occuring'
  • Other supertisious behaviours - e.g. touching wood, crossing fingers
  • Hoarding - collecting objects, which are often completely useless
  • Eating issues - e.g. avoiding certain foods, anorexia
  • Obsessive exercising

Aside from obsessive-compulsive disorder, or more appropriately named obsessional disorder, there are a huge number of conditions and symptoms that are caused by, or contributed to by obsessions and obsessional behaviours. These include: anorexia, ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy) or PVFS (Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome), emetophobia (fear of being sick), depression, insomnia, tinnitus, health anxiety, Tourette's.

Resolving Obsessions with Pure Hypnoanalysis

Pure Hypnoanalysis can be an effective therapy for treating obsessions and obsessive behaviour. It is a very special type of hypnotherapy and one of the best methods in the world for treating emotional, psychological or anxiety-related problems. Obsessions can often be caused by unresolved, bottled up emotions. In this uniquely successful therapy, you are able to completely resolve the root emotional cause of your problems, in a very safe and non-judgmental atmosphere. Over a period of about 6 to 12 sessions, we slowly link experiences together (using a process of 'free association') until you have released all your bottled up emotions. Upon finishing therapy, you will find that you are no longer held back by unresolved emotional issues and are able to live the life you really want, free of the anxieties that were causing your obsessions and obsessional behaviour.

Banishing Obsessions through Changing Limiting Beliefs

My Changing Limiting Beliefs training programme is an alternative way of putting an end to your obsessions. I have developed this process over the last 10 years, combining the unique insights that I have gained from working with so many clients with powerful psychological techniques. This programme was created specifically to treat problems and conditions that are created or contributed to by obsessions and obsessional behaviours. If you are obsessional you brood and worry, finding it difficult to 'let go' of certain thoughts and feelings. This programme teaches you how to take control of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, doubts and worries. Through changing your limiting beliefs you will find that you will gain amazing personal insight. With the training you will be able to completely change the way you think and feel about yourself and challenging situations, enabling you to live a happier, more successful and positive life.

The Changing Limiting Beliefs programme is particularly suitable for anyone who may, for whatever reason, find going through a course of Pure Hypnoanalysis very difficult or impossible.

Testimonials

On my first visit I sat waiting and I read your thank you cards from other clients which I found inspirational.
From that moment, I decided that I to wanted to be another one of your success stories.
Well here I am doing just that!
As you probably remember I would often come into your room with tears in my eyes but within minutes you had me giggling and not once did I leave without a smile on my face and little by little feeling more empowered with every session.
I was a very anxious, nervous person with low self esteem. I was hoping you would wave a magic wand and make it all disappear, but you soon made me realise it was something I had to do for myself, I took everything you said on board even if at times a little skeptical.
After you taught me the dream technique I put it into to practice straight away, at first it was incredibly hard because I had spent so long stuck in a negative and obsessive frame of mind but after a few sessions with you and using my own massive determined effort it started to really work and it made my confidence grow even more knowing I had the power to change my negative thoughts.
I am now so much better, I am having fun again, laughing lots, going out with friends and filling my life with lots of positive and happy things.
My family are so pleased at what you have helped me to achieve in such a short time.
Your humour and positive personality are infectious and I feel I have spent my sessions chatting with a friend not a therapist.
Thank you for helping me find a more positive and confident me
