Insomnia is a difficulty in sleeping properly. If you have insomnia you may:
- Have difficulty in falling asleep
- Have difficulty staying alseep
- Wake early in the morning, unable to get back to sleep
There are different catergories of insomnia:
- Transient insomnia lasts for a week or two. This kind of insomnia can be part of anxiety, stress or depression. It often occurs in response to events currently occuring in the person's life, for example financial worries, exam nerves, job problems etc.
- Acute insomnia lasts for a period of less than a month. The causes can be similar to those for transient insomnia.
- Chronic insomnia lasts for longer than a month and sometimes even years. Again this type of insomnia can be linked to stress, anxiety or depression.
Insomnia can be very debilitating. If you are regularly not getting a good night's sleep you will often struggle to function well during the day. You are likely to feel tired and irritable and held back from living the life you really wish to.
Insomnia is often caused by underlying anxieties and worries, whether these are about a current event in your life, or due to unresolved emotions from the past. You may find that your mind is racing with thoughts when you are trying to get to sleep. Other causes of insomnia include underlying medical conditions, enviromental conditions and consuming stimulants (e.g. caffine) before going to bed.
Another common sleep problem is having frequent nightmares. Nightmares can also be caused by underlying anxieties and worries. Nightmares can be very upsetting and can often be combined with insomnia as the sufferer fears going back to sleep.
Sleep problems can be very disruptive and distressing, but there is help available! I offer three distinct ways, which can really help your sleep problems.
Helping Insomnia and Sleep Problems through Suggestion Therapy
Suggestion Therapy (sometimes called Clinical Hypnosis) can be used to help insomnia or sleep problems. If you are struggling with anxiety before a one off event, for example a driving test, job interview or upcoming operation, which is then affecting your ability to sleep, then suggestion therapy is very effective treatment.
